Yummy Homemade Lip Gloss

We've gone through countless tubes and pots of lip gloss at our house with our 4-year-old daughter. She loves playing with it while playing dress-up, and also likes to use it at night for her "chapped lips." Since it's now winter I'll buy into the chapped lips part. Mine could use some help, too!!

Earlier this week, thanks to Pinterest (LOL), I found an EASY way to make your own lip gloss using just Vaseline and Kool Aid. And Vaseline is wonderful for softening lips, so it really works and can be used for more than just playtime. Plus it's super-cheap.

INGREDIENTS:
1/2 cup Vaseline
1/2 package of Kool Aid

SUPPLIES:
  • Microwaveable bowl (I used my 2-cup Pampered Chef glass prep bowl)
  • Something to stir with (a spatula works great)
  • Containers for the finished lip gloss (little pots from the craft store, etc.)

HOW TO MAKE THE LIP GLOSS:

1. Put 1/2 cup Vaseline in bowl.

(After 1 minute)
(After 2 minutes)
(After 2 1/2 minutes)

2. Microwave 30 seconds at a time, stirring in between, until Vaseline turns to liquid. Be careful -- the bowl and liquid will get very hot, so be sure to use a towel or oven mitts when taking it in and out of the microwave. It took mine 2 1/2 minutes to melt completely.

 3. Let cool down until Vaseline starts to gel slightly and look a little cloudy. I let mine sit 15 minutes.

 4. Stir in half a package of Kool Aid powder until dissolved.

 5. Put in containers and leave to solidify.

I forgot to buy some little containers for the lip gloss -- oops. In the meantime we're using random small medicine cups and a little plastic Glad container. I think in some cute containers these would be perfect for giving as little gifts, or for favors at a party or playdate. If you get any of the cute little pots, there are some cute printable labels here, or you could easily make your own. I intentionally halved this recipe from the original post. Even half a cup makes a lot of lip gloss!! So far it's a big hit in our house, and I'm sure we'll make some more yummy homemade lip gloss in a different flavor very soon. :O)
